12 Greatest Travel Tips.  by Charli Mace

Travel season is here and we have a few great tips to help you get to your destination worry free. Here are our favorites:

1. Take separates that you can mix and match. A 7pc capsule wardrobe will mix up to at least 21 different outfits. (Hint: Since you have used your Gemtone cards to coordinate your wardrobe colors, this is easy.)

2.  Zip top bags are easy to keep like things together in. Pack several empty ones because you will surely find several uses for them while you are away.

3.  Put toiletries in zip top bags.  This way if a bottle leaks, it won’t be all over your clothing. There are even some beautiful travel bags that you could purchase.  Be sure to get the ones with the zippered vinyl pouches, not just the mesh pockets.

4.  Shoes are a great place to tuck your socks.  They not only fill a void in an otherwise full suitcase, they keep your shoes from crunching flat, so they look and feel good upon arrival.

5. Choose clothing that is wrinkle free if you can.  Many knits and micro-fiber fabrics hang out beautifully when you reach your destination.

6. If your stay is more than 1 night, empty your suitcase soon after arrival.  Fluff items you put in drawers and hang up other garments promptly. Chances are that you won’t have to iron anything.

7. Take your old under garments with you and toss them in the trash after wearing.  This leaves room in your suitcase for new purchases and you won’t have dirty laundry to cart home.

8. If traveling with a spouse, don’t pack all your things in one bag and theirs in another. Mix garments for both of you in each suitcase.  In the event one bag is lost or delayed, you will both still have something to wear.

9. Pack your clothing in a suitcase and then put that suitcase in an empty larger one.  Now you have plenty of room to tuck new purchases for the return trip – a whole suitcase to fill up without buying another piece of luggage!

10. A rolling backpack is an absolute necessity.  Tuck in a change of underwear, your 311 zippy (see below), a small travel wallet (less is more in this respect) and a good book or ipod.  There is room for your cell phone charger and phone.  This light load is easy to wheel thru the airline terminal and can be worn as a back pack once you get your luggage from baggage claim.

11. Use the travel space bags when you can. The ones that hold several items and then you roll out the air really do travel well. I love these, as they let you pack a lot more in one suitcase, but that also comes at a price.  Packing too many of these in your bag really packs on the weight of the bag, so make sure you have wheels on your suitcases, and the ability to ‘stack’ a smaller bag on top of a wheeled one.

12. Check the latest travel advisories for airline travel.  To expedite screening the latest carry on rules are being labeled 3-1-1 .  This allows 3 oz of liquid in clear marked bottles, in 1 zip top bag with 1 bag allowed per person in carry on luggage.
