Do you have a favorite
color? Most of us do. Many of us have several favorite colors.
One color may be our favorite to wear. Another favorite may be the
color we use in our home decorating. And yet another may be the
color of our car. Here is a primer of what our favorite colors say
about us or our surroundings.
RED - Red is the color of love.
It actually stimulates a faster heartbeat and breathing. It
signifies power, strength, health, lust, danger and self confidence. Red
cars are the most frequently stolen. Don’t
wear red to a court appearance, though, the image of power is a threat to
the judge!
ORANGE – Orange is the
most universal attraction color. It
signifies stimulation, encouragement, adaptability and plenty.
Orange will brighten any atmosphere and make you feel independent
and social. Orange has been
popular among fast food chains.
YELLOW – Yellow is the
color of wisdom. It signifies
knowledge, learning, concentration, persuasion, charm and confidence.
It is the color of joy, yellow makes you laugh. Sunny yellow is an
attention getter, but it can also be quite the agitator.
People loose their tempers more in a yellow room and babies will
cry more (not recommended for the nursery).
Be careful if you pair this with black.
The yellow/ black combination signifies ‘warning’, as in a
bumble bee or caution sign.
GREEN - Green
symbolizes nature. It signifies finances, fertility, luck, charity and
growth. Dark green is
masculine and implies wealth. Green
is relaxing and refreshing. Hospitals
often use green because it relaxes patients.
I’m sure you’ve heard the TV folks talk about their guests
relaxing in ‘the green room’ just before their appearance.
BLUE – Blue is a
pacifier. It signifies
tranquility, understanding, patience, health, truth and devotion.
Blue actually causes the body to produce calming chemicals!
People are more productive in blue rooms.
Wear ‘true blue’ to your next job interview or important
presentation meeting, you will appear as the ultimate authority. Are you
dieting? A blue light bulb in your refrigerator will certainly put a
damper on your appetite; blue food is the least appealing.
VIOLET/PURPLE - Purple
is worn by the kings. It
signifies power, piety, sanctity, wisdom, luxury and high ideals.
Violet purifies our thoughts, but it is also feminine and romantic.
Purple is a very passionate color.
BLACK -
Black is the color of authority and power.
(Remember the judge?). It
also implies submission, or negativity. Black outfits are popular in
fashion because the dark color makes people seem thinner, we’ll discuss
this in depth in a future issue. It is also timeless.
Black outfits can also be overpowering, making the wearer appear
evil, remember Dracula.
WHITE -
White symbolizes purity and innocence, hence the white bridal gown.
It is popular because it is light and airy.
It ‘goes with anything’ and can range from cool to warm tones.
White is associated with healing.
Doctors and nurses wore white to imply sterility.
BROWN -
Brown is reliable, like the earth.
Brown signifies stability and familiarity. It signifies comfort
(like milk chocolate), abundant in nature.
It is a friendly color, but can also be sad and wistful.
Deep tones like sable imply richness like leather.
