What Do Colored Ribbons Represent?

Awareness ribbons are seen as magnets on cars, lapel pins or tied on trees in front of homes.  Ribbons come in different colors and patterns each with a different meaning.  Additionally, some colors have multiple meanings.  There are approximately 25 different colored ribbons each with a different meaning.  Here are just a few of the most popular.

 

Pink

 

The pink ribbon most commonly symbolizes breast cancer awareness.  Additional meanings for this pink ribbon are to symbolize birth parents and childhood cancer.

 

Red

 

The red ribbon is most widely known as awareness for AIDS and HIV.  However, the red ribbon also signifies substance abuse, DARE and MADD.

 

Yellow

 

The yellow ribbon shows support for the troops.  Additional meanings include POW, MIA, suicide prevention, and a sign of hope.  A pale yellow ribbon supports spina bifida.

 

Jigsaw

 

The jigsaw puzzle pieces ribbon is for autism awareness.

 

American Flag

 

The American flag ribbon supports patriotism in addition to remembrance of those who lost their lives in the 9/11 attacks.
