Green and St. Patrick's Day

As February is coming to a close and March is soon approaching, many people are looking forward to St. Patrick’s Day. St. Patrick’s Day is a great day in which we celebrate both the life of Saint Patrick and Ireland. On this special day, many people are seen donning green clothing and accessories. Shamrocks are all around. Even restaurants will add green food coloring to some food items or drinks to make them more festive. But why is the color green so closely associated with St. Patrick’s Day?
St. Patrick’s Day is an Irish holiday. Ireland is known as “The Emerald Isle”. Since emeralds are green, St. Patrick’s Day has been known as a green holiday. Green is also associated with St. Patrick’s Day because green is the color of the shamrock. Saint Patrick used this three-leaved plant to explain the Holy Trinity of the Christian religion.
Green is also the color of spring and spring is right around the corner from St. Patrick’s Day. Finally, leprechauns are associated with this holiday. Since leprechauns are usually wearing green, it is easy to see how people would want to wear green on St. Patrick’s Day.
On March 17th, throw on some green and enjoy St. Patrick’s Day.
Enjoy,
